Q&A with Mac :)
-
k so if you could speak out on one issue in the fanfic community what would it be? Feel free to use this has your soapbox :)
I guess I’ll just make my usual plea to please, for the love of pete and all that’s green, use a beta… and not just any beta. Utilize the services of someone who understands grammar, spelling, tense, and punctuation. Find someone who isn’t afraid to tell you if something sucks or needs editing. My guess is because this is a PTB class, knowing enough to use a beta is a non-issue, but I’ll still rant about it.
Nothing ruins a fic faster than seeing “shutter” used instead of “shudder” or dialogue that’s not punctuated correctly. I’ve heard some argue that we’re not professional writers, so why should it matter? Trust me: it matters. We should all make every effort to put out the best possible product.
I think the friends I’ve made. The people involved in this fandom are generally pretty awesome. I also think it’s pretty amazing to get immediate feedback on my work, and it has definitely helped me grow as a writer.
I read a shit load of fic, but my current faves are Empires of the Mind/Hibbleton78; Becoming Bella Swan/BellaFlan; Hydraulic Level 5/Gondolier; Osa Bella/Myg; The Cullen Campaign/belladonna1472; and Art School Confidential/farkle.
My faves that are completed are The Worst of Weather/YellowGlue and And With Thee I Fade Away/Derdriu oFaolain.

mac214
Have you ever read a story that was so good it made you angry? That owned you so completely you almost resented it? I have read 2 that fit that description, and Ultio by mac214 and 22blue was one. I can’t even describe what this story does to me. I find myself having downtime and somehow my fingers are clicking on this story. EVERY TIME. I have literally read this story about 19 times. Yes, it is that good, and yes, I am that obsessed with it.
A part of me wanted to believe that this magic could only be created in a collab between these two. Maybe they just feed off each other and make one another better. That part was proven wrong as soon as I found Things That Go Bump in the Night. I read this story in one night. I stayed up till 4 am reading, and then I couldn’t sleep because I thought I was going to be chocked by a ghost. Even though i’m not blonde.
And then there is the smut.
Mac is the perfect example of how smut SHOULD be used. To compliment a plot. Smut should not be the main course with a side of plot. Instead smut should be like the gravy at Thanksgiving. Essential in a non-essential way. Confused about how that is possible? READ ULTIO OR THINGS THAT GO BUMP IN THE NIGHT! Here are the goods:

And in case you didn’t know: Mac owns a special place in my heart for being fuckawesome AND a PTB author :) You make us look good Mac :)

Angstgoddess003
If you are a part of the Twilight fandom (or have ever just randomly searched angst on google) you have heard the name. You have read the story. You probably know three random facts about her (we wont ask why) When you think of Twific authors she is definitely one of the names that come to mind. And in the words of my love muffin LuluM : “holy shit it’s AG yo” (ok it was really me who said that but shhhh) Yea she’s all that and more.
If you follow me on Twitter you will know how hard i was searching to right this post. After two weeks of failures i decided there is no way in hell you can actually write anything that is fitting of this lady. So i won’t even try. Just know that she popped my fanfic cherry and i have been smitten ever since :) Here are the goods:

AG Q&A
So i know i have probably mentioned that WA was my first fic. It honestly brought me into the world of twific and i think that is the same as a lot of people. But i’m aware thats not exactly your favorite piece of work so im going to ask a question about MY favorite fic by you. Of Gypsies and Geminis. What’s happening in the land of Prettyward and Gypsper?
LOL. Pass...
No, really. I wanted to start over and use my plot as an original fic, because I just didn't feel like the idea I had in mind could suit the twi constraints. I already have some of the first draft finished, and when I get the time, I'm gonna give it a go. I'll be posting it online though, for free, so don't think this is an assy publishing move, because it's totally not, swear!
Let’s talk about the fact that when you google angst your name is the first thing that pops up. How cool is that?!
That is just beyond weird to me...
Ok so if you could speak out on one issue in the fanfic community what would it be? Feel free to use this has your soapbox :)
Oooooh my. I'm not really sure. I suppose... just accepting that we're all flawed? That we all have room and space to grow as writers, and maybe even as people, and that being criticized isn't the end of the world, even if the critic is doing it out of anger or spite or jealousy or boredom. That there is likely truth in all criticism, and you can either get really upset about it, or accept it at face value and open yourself up to change.
What is the best oppurtunity being part of this fandom has given you?
Well, I suppose going to ComicCon last year was an epic opportunity. Or networking professionally. Or even just getting a lot of really good feedback on a craft I never thought I'd begin experimenting with. But mostly just the opportunity to meet some really amazing people.
What are you reading right now?
A lot of slash. Raw and Rosy by TuesdayMidnight, Uncomfortable by SavannahVee, and also a lot of E/B, like A Rough Start. I actually have been too busy to seek out new WiPs, but I still have a good bit of updates falling into my inbox that make me all happy faced.
ok now that i faked a half way decent interview, let’s get down to the good stuff: SMUT!
Why is it so easy for you to write these fuckhot scenes in EPOV?
Because describing vaginas squicks me the fuck out. In a female POV, there'd have to be some description there. I mean, think about how much male POV addresses the penis. It'd be similar for a female. I just don't like describing them. It makes me uncomfortable. I'm unable to find a classy and unawkward way of describing it through female POV. Guys are also just... simple. Impulsive. They don't overthink sex like a female might, and that makes it easier for me to focus on other things.
So your not a fan of the non-slash buttsecks? Why?
LOL. How did you know that? Weird. But true, nonetheless. I just can't see a purpose for it. In slash, there's really no other choice. It's justified. In non-slash, it's usually being done as a kink or a personal desire, which is fine, but I need more than that. I think.,.. if a story is exploring a kink like that, then it's probably not my type of story anyway. If the characters need a NEW way to have sex, then, presumably, all the normal ways have been blown through, and I'm left to wonder how much sex the story really needs. So... yeah. It's for some people, just not for me. I don't knock it. Just don't prefer it.
Number one smut writing tip.
Be comfortable.
Number one smut pet peeve.
Step by step. Too many movements or gestures being described. Feeling as though I'm reading a script when I want to experience the atmosphere more.
Number one thing that needs improvement in smut writing.
We don't need to follow parameters, but so often I feel like people do. When Edward can honestly go without pinching Bella's nipples, and Bella can honestly, truly, have sex without sucking his dick and teasing his tip, then why are they? What is the purpose of it? What knowledge am I coming away from that experience with in regards to the characters or plot? Unless the moment can not be depicted successfully without it, then it shouldn't be included. We need to show sex to depict intimacy, but I think we could be more discerning about what that moment includes.
Student question:
First I'd like to thank you for writing Wide Awake. It was Wide Awake that got me hooked on fanfiction, and the first one I was actually addicted to. I still go back to it from time to time. I'm also very fond of Company Loves Misery!
I find it hard to write from EPOV. In my fic focus is on Bella, but sometimes I need an EPOV to better explain what's happening. I do feel, though, that I kind of lose his voice from time to time, and it is hard for me to get him to talk to me. It's also difficult to give him a voice that is different from Bella's, because I don't want them to sound too much alike. I'm not sure I pull that off, unfortunately...
How did you find Edwards "voice", and what do an author need to keep in mind to make a good male POV?
/SwedenSara
I think I pay attention to the way men talk a lot. Like.. they'll say shit a certain way and I'll think, "Wow, thats totally not how I would have said that. Weird. Intriguing." Also, I admire popular male characters. Like Hyde from That 70's Show. Or even my overly vulgar brother. In my head, I kind of apply that voice to my male characters I guess. But I apply that same rule of thumb to Bella, so the characters in my head are just already so far off. I read my dialog back to myself in those voices and make adjustments. It can be difficult, though, to remain consistent. There's still a lot to be said for people who are so focused on one character that they have issues dually channeling. It just means you're super invested in that characterization, which isn't always a bad thing.
Thanks AG for doing this interview. For being a SU GA and for being overall fuckawesome. You rock my socks.

Q&A with AmeryMarie
Saturday June 12th, we were joined at SU by the fantastic AmeryMarie!!! She took the time to answer these questions for us. We love you like well written smut AmeryMarie :)
1. What is your biggest pet peeve in smut?
Tweens or virgins writing smut. It comes across as awkward – and not in a good way – and ridiculously immature. I just can’t read it. Is it that you can’t write about something that you’ve never done? Yes, but no. I’ve written about sex acts that I’ve never actually experienced, but I’ve at least sex before, so I have a base of experience with which to start.
2. Do you have a smut writing ritual?
Nope, none whatsoever. Much like sex, I just do it.
I take that back. If I’m writing a smut-shot, I figure out the sex first, and then build the story around it. If I don’t, then I tend to spend way too much time developing the plot, and it ends up being really fucking long. It’s backfired on me before, but it tends to curb my verbosity. The original O/S that I planned to use for my Friday Free For All piece is a great example of when it fails.
What was supposed to be a simple, little hate-sex O/S, ended up at like 12k and wasn’t finished, so I had to pull something out of my ass, and get it beta’d in like three-four days. I’m still working on that piece whenever I can spare a few minutes or I need a break from BH. It’s so close to done, that I should really just sit down and finish it, but BH is my focus right now.
3. What is your #1 DONT in smut?
When the tone of the sex, and the action leading up to it don’t match, or the characters are completely OOC during when things get heated. You’re not going to be strolling through the park, holding hands and making goo-goo eyes at each other, and then have angry sex. The OOC part is a bit trickier, because sometimes people almost seem to take on a different persona in the bedroom, or they attempt to be bolder than usually are. In that case, it’s your job as a writer to convey that, because no one is going to believe a geeky, shy Edward when he turns into a dirty-talking, sex god…especially not if it’s his first time.
4. If you could give a new writer just one tip for writing smut, what would it be?
This isn’t really smut-specific, but it’s just as important to smut as it is to the non-smutty stuff. Find someone who is going to be brutally honest to pre-read for you. Sure, you want someone to tell you that you’re amazing, and better than everyone else, but Yes-men help no one. They actually do you more harm than anything, because they don’t help you improve.
You’ll probably get your feelings hurt on occasion, but personally, I would rather that than to embarrass myself in public. Just remember that they aren’t saying it to be mean, but to help you develop your craft.
5. When writing sex scenes, do you find it difficult to strike a balance between describing the action versus the emotions and sensations the characters are feeling?
I don’t think it’s difficult for me. I generally feel that Newton’s (not that Newton) Third Law, at least part of it, applies: for every action there should be a . . . reaction.
For short sex scenes, I tend to focus more on the emotions, and paint a hazy picture of the actual actions. For longer scenes I try to find a fairly even balance, and for really, um…dirty or vulgar ones, I focus less on the emotions/sensations, and more on the act itself.
6. What, to you, are unforgivable errors when writing sex scenes?
Forgetting about anatomy is a big one. Some things just aren’t physically possible. I read something in a fic where E has B bent over and, while fully buried inside her, he manages to kiss her lower back! If he can physically accomplish that that then he can probably also give himself blowjobs, and wouldn’t be having sex with anyone other than his mouth. That’s probably not true, but you get my point.
Um, ULAL is another. Oh, and weird or creepy terms of endearment, especially ‘my lovely.’ I hate ‘my lovely.’
7. What are your thoughts in regards to sex scenes involving the loss of a woman's virginity with no pain or awkwardness?
I understand why writers do it and, yes, some women don’t experience any pain, some even get off, but they’re the exceptions that prove the rule.
Sometimes it works, and other times it’s like, ‘Bullshit!’ Depends on the writer. I think it was maybe Hide and Drink where Bella didn’t experience much discomfort, and it worked for me because of Bella’s explanation regarding why. However, in most fics – for me, at least – it doesn’t work. I kind of read it with a healthy dose of disbelief, and move on.
I usually avoid writing deflowerings for this very reason. I think I’ve only written it twice. One time it was pure comedy, and the other time was kind of sweet, but she certainly didn’t get off.
8. What phrase or term have you come across in reading sex scenes that ruined the scene for you?
I can’t really think of any off the top of my head. I never can! It annoys me that I see shit that makes me go, ‘No,’ but ask me to remember it five minutes later, and I can’t.

AmeryMarie
This Saturday we are being joined at Smut University by the very talented AmeryMarie!!! This weeks course will be taught by my love muffin, Lulu M, and is on Visual Imagery in smut :) So you should already know there are some great things in store for Saturday!
If you didn’t already know, AmeryMarie is the author of Bad Habit (books one and two)!! Haven’t read BH?! Shame on you! Go here NOW: http://www.fanfiction.net/u/1769777/AmeryMarie
AmeryMarie is an amazing author who truly knows how to perfectly capture all elements of well written smut. Reading BH: Book 1 was like a roller-coaster ride. I never anticipated what was going to happen next. Badward pwned me hardcore and there were times where I truly felt for Bella, like I was her Alice. AmeryMarie MAKES you love her characters. Which above everything is the mark of a good writer. Bottom Line: BH owned me from the prologue and held me all the way through. Here are the goods:

Smut University FFn
SU now has a fanfiction.net page:
http://www.fanfiction.net/~smutuniversity
A complete list of all our “Summer of Smut” authors can be found there as well as a list of my favorite stories by them. I hope the list can offer you a very steamy summer :)

Summer of Smut
Smut University literally started out as a random idea on Twitter. Someone said “ you guys should teach classes on this shit” And 4 days later SU was born!
Because of the overwhelming growth of SU, Monika and I have decided to host the “Summer of Smut” The summer of smut is a 14 week course on smut writing. Basically it is the first session of SU. We will have fourteen courses through the beginning of September. The “Summer of Smut” will finish off with a “Summer of Smut” o/s challenge hosted by yours truly :) Be aware that the challenge is totally separate from PTB. It will just be a chance for the wonderful SU students to show the teachers what you have learned during the first session of SU. There will be a first place and runner up. We will also have some guest judges picked from some of the guest authors we had this session. More info will be posted has we get closer :)
We will be taking a break after the summer session. This break is going to give us time to create new lesson plans, get new guest authors and do all the grunt work that goes into bringing ya’ll SU. We will return in January with all new classes and smuttier attitudes.
If you start having SU withdraws (i know i will have them) or just miss me (im sure you all will) i will be updating this blog regularly so feel free to stop by and check it out :) You can also stay connected with your SU teachers on twitter:

Full Ninapolitan and tby789 Q&A
This is the full Q&A i did with Nina and Christina. These two ladies are awesome and were very sweet and despite what Christina thinks were not “lame” at all!! Thank you for breaking SU’s guest author cherry! Enjoy the Q&A ya’ll :)
Nina (Ninapolitan)
Do you get it from real life?
Stories, yes. The act? No. Too self-insert. It's all pretty much imagination.
Do you let Mr. Ninapolitan read it?
Mine listened to my crackfic Eduardo's Lessons of the Sexing on ific. He basically laughed and shook his head through the whole thing. He reads my original writing but not fic.
Were you shy about it the first time?
No, but to be fair. I'm not a nervous or shy person at all about anything so yeah. The answer is no ;) Shit you guys are serious with these questions. lol.
Smut pet peeve-
"Virgins" having multiple orgasms the first time they have sex.
(student question)
For me it's personal...like pouring out your guts for everyone to see. Is it like that for you or is it the same as writing other scenes?
It definitely pours out, I've heard of people outlining lemons and shit. And that's great if it works for them but it wouldn't work for me. It plays like a movie in my dirty gutter brain ;)
Do you do research? If so, is it in film or RL?
Hahaha, awesome question. Yes, is the interesting answer. No, is my answer. Ha.
Favorite name for the "bits"? Female? Male?
I'm a fan of the old school cock and pussy. I think that tagline was in my high school yearbook too under my picture. Christ. In my first story I was hell bent on making it all comedy so the most crackerific words were used. Love tunnels and meatstick. Yeah. I'm an ass.
Christina(TBY789)
Do they get it from real life?
I suppose I've been inspired by personal experience, but if as far as ever having sex in a La Perla or wanting my panties ripped, then I'd have to answer with a big NO.
-Do you let Mr.tby789 read it?
My husband is super supportive and reads pretty much everything I write.
-Were you shy about it the first time?
I'm STILL shy about it. I don't think the things I write surprise anyone more than me.
-Smut pet peeve.
Oh boy, smut is a big soapbox for me.
If you're going to have a sex scene, do it right- have it pre-read, read again and beta'ed. Make sure it's needed and right for the characters, the story and the writer. Does it make sense? Would your characters actually say the things you've written? Is what they're doing even possible?
-Do they do research? If so, is it in film or RL?
Nope.
-Favorite name for the "bits"? Female? Male?
I use a lot of "he moved over her" or "felt him pressed against me" sort of stuff.
Welcome to Smut University
Smut University is brought to you by the lovely mods of Project Team Beta. This blog is my personal SU blog where i talk about upcoming guests and classes. I'll spotlight info learned and elaborate with my personal opinions on any interesting topics we discuss in class. Keep in mind that SU is only a 14 week program so during the SU break (from early September to January) you can get your SU updates on what I am planning here :) If you have questions or requests for guest authors or class topics or blog topics please email me at vasweetpea@projectteambeta.com Welcome to Smut Uni everyone!
